What is the LMD system?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The LMD system was implemented in Algeria under Executive Decree No. 04-371 of November 21, 2004. It aims, through an innovative framework, to integrate the University into economic development and to harmonize the higher education system with the rest of the world.<\/p>

Study Framework under the LMD System<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The structure of training in the LMD system is based on 3 degrees: BACHELOR \u2013 MASTER \u2013 DOCTORATE<\/strong><\/p>

Training programs are organized into semesters<\/strong> and teaching units (UE)<\/strong> that are transferable and capitalizable<\/p>

Implementation of the credit system<\/strong><\/p>

The Semester<\/strong><\/span>
\u25ba The semester is the periodic duration of training units: the basic unit of training is no longer the academic year but the semester.<\/strong>
\u25ba The three study cycles are expressed in semesters:<\/p>

Bachelor: 6 semesters<\/strong><\/p>

Master: 4 semesters<\/strong><\/p>

Doctorate: 6 semesters<\/strong>
\u25ba A semester has a defined number of weeks: 1 semester = 15 weeks (teaching + evaluation)<\/strong><\/p>

Semester and Credits<\/strong><\/span>
\u25ba A semester corresponds to a set workload measured in credits.
\u25ba All the UE (teaching units) of a semester total 30 credits.
\u25ba Therefore:<\/p>

1st cycle = Bachelor = 180 credits<\/strong><\/p>

2nd cycle = Master = 120 credits<\/strong><\/p>

3rd cycle = Doctorate preparation<\/strong><\/p>

The Teaching Unit (UE)<\/strong><\/span>
\u25ba The basic unit of a study program = an autonomous and coherent subdivision within a curriculum.
\u25ba Teaching methods:<\/p>

Lectures, tutorials, practicals, fieldwork, research, etc.<\/p>

Or a combination of these forms.
\u25ba Its value is defined in credits.
\u25ba It is coded and numbered.
\u25ba Validation and promotion:<\/p>

Obtain the required average for the UE<\/p>

Accumulate all required UEs to obtain a degree or diploma<\/p>

The Credit<\/strong><\/span>
\u25ba A unit that determines the value of a UE and the total workload (CTT) required to achieve its objectives.
\u25ba 1 credit = 20 hours<\/strong> of CTT for the student: lectures, tutorials, practicals, research, internships, and personal work.
\u25ba A semester has 30 credits:<\/p>

Equivalent to 600 hours of student workload<\/p>

Maximum of 360 hours of classroom teaching per semester (exceptionally 420H)<\/p>

Classroom teaching = max 30 hours per week (exceptionally 35H)<\/p>

What is a Study Pathway?<\/strong><\/span>
\u25ba It is the route chosen by the student to achieve their educational goals.
\u25ba The mix of compulsory, optional, and elective UEs allows them to design a personal path.<\/p>

Distribution of UEs during the study program<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Level 1: Purpose = Foundations (UEF):<\/strong> essential basic knowledge<\/p>

Level 2: Purpose = Deepening (UEM):<\/strong> essential knowledge for the pathway<\/p>

Level 3: Purpose = Specialization (UED):<\/strong> courses leading to diploma majors<\/p>

Level 4: Purpose = Complementary (UET):<\/strong> additional to the major or minors<\/p>
